∘₊✧─ ⊹⊱ FOUNDING ⊰⊹ ─✧₊∘

A group of travelers were all banished from their separate homes and found each other at a harbor. They all discovered that each of them were exiled and without a place to stay, all sick of living in their society. So they pooled their money together, purchased a small boat, and sailed off into the sea. Eventually, they found land in what is now known as “Phaedra”, docking in what would become the Anghor Coast. These people, a tiefling named Nethiri, an elf named Ivasaar, a dwarf named Eribeam, two humans named Kigan and Mar, a half-orc named Mugor, a halfling named Gelmia, and a half-elf named Ellynn discovered a lush and vibrant land of sprawling plains, dense forests, and beautiful seas. They slowly built up a town they named Garigill.

One day, as Ellynn and Mar were taking a walk in the plains near Garigill, they saw an odd looking and huge bird flying towards the mountain range in the north. Instantly intrigued by this creature, they followed it for ages until they discovered a cave that the bird flew into, nestled in a mountain crest. Upon making it up to the cave, they discovered a phoenix. The phoenix communicated telepathically with them and was surprised to see that there were civilians on the land. The phoenix told Ellynn and Mar that it would provide them with knowledge in exchange for leaving it alone and never sharing the location of its cave. Ellynn and Mar accepted, and the phoenix told them some secrets of the Weave and how to harness it. It provided them with an ancient magical tome of spells from its lair and dispelled them from the cave. Ellynn and Mar returned to the others in Garigill and told them how they were then able to study magic and become wizards. Ellynn and Mar continued to harness their magical abilities, studying and becoming quite prolific spellcasters.

Eventually, Ivasaar and Kigan traveled back to the mainland and told others of their discoveries. They encouraged people looking for a fresh start to make the journey to the land they collectively named Phaedra, hoping for a bright future. People slowly began trickling into Phaedra—most staying permanently, some coming just as a short adventure—and the population began to expand in both numbers and races. All sorts of creatures, humanoids and not, found their way to Phaedra in all sorts of ways. What began as a growing city of Garigill turned into more people than the city could handle.

The founders, who were running different areas of the city as sort of pseudo-mayors, agreed they needed to take different willing groups of people and move out into other areas of Phaedra. Nethiri stayed in Garigill, Mugor moved up to the Dreiy Mountains, Ivasaar moved down to the Rimoury Woods, Mar moved even further down to the Enchanted Peninsula, Kigan and Ellynn moved to the Astye Coast, Eribeam moved to right below the Dreiy Mountains, and Gelmia moved to the Tufrain Coast. Elves tended to follow Ivasaar, magic users tended to follow Mar, a mix of peoples followed Mugor, artisanally inclined peoples tended to follow Eribeam, and a mix of peoples followed Gelmia, Kigan and Ellynn, and stayed with Nethiri. As towns and cities grew—some founded by the original founders of Phaedra, but new ones continued popping up founded by all sorts of new people—Phaedra became a bit more of a bustling land.

Eventually, as the original founders met either timely or untimely deaths (assassination attempts in search of power happened on the rare occasion), new leaders rose to power and each settlement became closer to a stereotype of the original explorers that followed their respective founder. Elves who came to Phaedra almost always stayed in the Rimoury Woods; orcs, hobgoblins, and the like went to the Dreiy Mountains; magic users slowly all ended up in the Enchanted Peninsula in search of others like themselves, assorted fish folk stayed around the Anghor Coast; gnomes, dwarves, halflings, and humans gathered just below the Dreiy Mountains; Garigill and the surrounding towns, as well as those on the Tufrain Coast, remained relatively strong melting pots; and the settlements along the Astye coast erupted into thriving near-kingdoms, attracting all sorts of people to make the long journey there.

Or, that's the story recorded
in the history books. But history
is written by the victors.

Before Phaedra’s inception, the land sat almost entirely unknown. It’s beginning ties to that of a group of hags being banished from the Feywild and creating a fey crossing in what would come to be known as Falline Forest. There were a few animal-like peoples scattered throughout the forest, whose origins there remain unknown, but Phaedra was nearly entirely empty. The hags moved east and settled sparsely from the edge of the forest to the coast, distrusting of each other and wary of whose hunger for power would cause them to strike first. However, this soon changed when a group of travelers docked on the coast and encountered the hags. At first, the travelers just assumed that the hags were normal people just like themselves, but they soon uncovered that the hags were, in fact, hags. The hags banded together in an attempt to dispel the travelers, but the travelers managed to kill a few hags in the night. The remaining hags dispersed even more, spreading out individually throughout the rest of Phaedra. As more settlements popped up, led by the very ones who tried to kill them, the hags either moved deeper out of society or tried to blend into the towns until they could become undetectable. The story of the phoenix providing Ellynn and Mar with the book they used to learn magic is also false—the book they used was found in the homes of one of the hags they killed.
